A reward for mobile-friendly sites from Google

A reward for mobile-friendly sites from Google

A survey of Fortune 500 websites reveals that 44% failed the test and another 4% of sites did not produce a response, where a large subset of the companies in the 4% category actually discourage Web Bots from Google and Bing.

Search giant Google will update its search algorithm to promote mobile-friendly sites from the 21st of April, given that people are now browsing a lot through their mobile phones and sites should be adaptable as per the browser screen.

A survey of Fortune 500 websites reveals that 44% failed the test and another 4% of sites did not produce a response, where a large subset of the companies in the 4% category actually discourage Web Bots from Google and Bing.

What is “mobile-friendly” and how does it influence SEO?

Mobile-friendly sites render in different layouts depending on the size of the browser screen. In general, responsive design is recommended, which dynamically adapts contents according to the size of the browser window. As per the size of the screen, all elements of the site are scaled to the optimal size. This is effective from an SEO perspective as mobile-friendly sites are preferred by consumers who are increasingly browsing content over their mobiles.

The SEO risk: Does it exist for the Fortune 500?

There is an argument that because companies in the Fortune 500 have strong brand awareness, they don’t really need a lift from search on their home pages. In this context, it may be noted that even large tech companies like IBM discourage Google Bots from searching their content. A candid assessment leads to the conclusion that the Fortune 500 companies do not appear to be affected significantly – irrespective of mobile-friendly layout or not – given plenty of external links to their websites from suppliers, partners and vendors, among others, but they still need to be mobile-friendly because of the dramatic shift towards mobile devices.
