Coca Cola, MTN most admired global, African brands in Africa

Coca Cola emerged as the most admired and valuable global brand in Africa while MTN won top honours as the most admired and valuable African brand at the African Business Award 2013.

Coca Cola emerged as the most admired and valuable global brand in Africa while MTN won top honours as the most admired and valuable African brand at the African Business Award 2013.

It may be noted that Johannesburg-headquartered MTN is a South Africa-based multinational mobile telecommunications company, operating in many African, European and Middle Eastern countries.

In other categories, Ehiopian Airlies won the African Business of the Year award while Edward Boateng, CEO of Global Media Alliance,  an influential media group in Ghana, was crowned Business Leader of the Year.

The CEO of Standard Chartered’s Nigerian unit, Bola Adesola won the “Most Outstanding Woman in Business” prize. According to an official statement, as the first female CEO and the first indigenous CEO of one of Standard Chartered’s most promising markets, she provides leadership for the group in Nigeria through developing overall country strategy and direction.

The award for good corporate governance went to the UAE-based Abraaj Group – a leading private equity investor operating in the growth markets of Africa, Latin America, Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia, Turkey and Central Asia. Kenya’s project Mawingu – a pioneering deployment of solar-powered base stations working together with TV white spaces – bagged the award for innovation.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Gervais Koffi Djondo, President of Asky Airlines while Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holding was anointed African business icon. Djondo is one of the founding fathers of the pan-African banking group Ecobank and also the founder of the West African regional airline Asky. He won the award for building regional giants to trade across African borders and promote regional integration. Elumelu, a renowned Nigerian banker, investor and philanthropist was honoured for transforming the regional business landscape through his work.

The African Business Award 2013, organised by African Business magazine and Business-in-Africa Events, was held last month at Mandarin Oriental, New York.
