First Steers branch open in London
Ventures Africa reports that the first Steers food store is now operational in Claphma, southwest of London. Steers is owned by Famous Brands, the JSE-listed food retailer based in South Africa. This followed endless calls from many South Africans living and working in London longing for food that reminds them of home.
Kevin Hedderwick, the CEO of Famous Brands, said despite austerity measures in the UK, business climate is currently looking much better than it has been for a while.
Hedderwick added that the plan to open Steers during this time in the UK has “never been better.” Famous Brands has operated in the UK for a while, he said, admitting it had been tough during this period. But in the past few months, Famous Brands has opened doors of two Wimpys in the UK, Hedderwick said.
Famous Brands wants to open more Wimpys this year. Famous Brands, whose group includes Debonairs and Mugg & Bean Restaurants, said it had all the time contemplated spreading the Steers brand to the UK.
Famous Brands’ move implies that take- away and other eatery food is on the growth trajectory in the UK. However, a Johannesburg-based analyst said Steers would have to contest with recognised and formidable fast food outlets in the UK.
