Health; safety and wellbeing of elderly and disabled to guide Government’s actions

“The health, safety and wellbeing of the Elderly and Disabled will be the main priorities of the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions and in line with this vision the Government will do everything possible in this regard,” enunciated The Minister of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions, Fazila Daureeawoo.

Speaking at the annual Christmas Party organised for the disabled elderly and young disabled residents of the ‘Foyer Trochetia’ in Pointe aux Sables, Fazila Daureeawoo stated that the Government duty to ensure that the Seniors receive the necessary facilities for their health, security and welfare.

“This is not a favour to the Elderly”, she stated, “it is their rights as they have worked hard and contributed to the development of the country and we should be grateful to them.”

Highlighting Government’s commitment to ensure that the Elderly and Vulnerable live a decent and secure life, the Minister recalled the recent increase in old age and other basic pensions as well as the payment of salary compensation as from January 2014.

She further added that her Ministry will be working on new regulations in order to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of the Elderly.

About ‘Foyer Trochetia’:

Unique in its kind in Mauritius, the ‘Foyer Trochetia’ is a centre for elderly persons with severe disabilities, managed jointly by the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions and the Arya Sabha, Mauritius.

It is to be noted that since last year, the Foyer Trochetia also caters for some 13 young adults with disabilities, in addition to the 16 severely disabled elderly persons.
