The Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) has organized last Friday October31, 2014, in Ebène, an initiation workshop for some 600 students from 94 secondary schools who will be on placement in 30 organisations for two weeks during the third semester school holidays.

The main objective of the placement programme is to bridge the gap between the schooling system and the world of work from an early stage.

Students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves to a working environment and reinforce academic learning with practical workplace experience.

According to HRDC, work experience offers many opportunities for good careers education and provides opportunities for self-development, career exploration and developing career management skills.

Students whose motivation to succeed at school has been faltering may benefit from well-planned extended work experience.Work experience does take a lot of careful planning, monitoring and follow up if it is to be successful.

The project was first launched in August 2007 and has been successfully replicated in Rodrigues since July last year.

Work experience is now an important part of a young person’s education, where the vast majority of employers, students and their parents are positive about the experience and recognise the benefits that can come from well-organised programmes.

By emphasising the importance of out-of-classroom career-related experiences for students, the project exposes the students to the new realities of the world of work.
