Mauritius played host to the fifth edition of the New Members Ceremony of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) on Friday August 08, 2014 at the Le Méridien Hotel.
Sponsored by renowned CA firm BDO, this annual ceremony welcomed 198 new ACCA members and was attended by around 250 people, in the presence of Mauritius environment minister Deva Virahsawmy, who is also an ACCA member.
The global president of ACCA, Martin Turner, was the guest of honor while BDO Group Managing Partner Yacoob Ramtoola attended as guest speaker.
The new members of the association were conferred their ACCA pins by Martin Turner; Yacoob Ramtoola; Hemraz Hoolash, ACCA council member; Madhavi Ramdin-Clark, Head of ACCA Mauritius; and Georges Chung Ming Kan and Yuttam Joysuree, partners at BDO.
With as many as 2,600 accountants in Mauritius registered with ACCA, representing around 90% of the overall experts in the field in the island economy, Mauritius boasts one of the highest number of accountants registered with the association in sub-Saharan Africa.
Besides, Madhavi Ramdin-Clark noted that Mauritius boasts among the highest ACCA memberships per head in the world. She also noted that, as an ACCA member, “one is groomed to constructively contribute towards the economic development of the country and play a crucial role in developing new sectors and be part of the global finance transformation process.”
Being an ACCA member confers a prestigious status in the professional accountant field and opens up new avenues of opportunities for its members.
“Our mission remains to provide opportunity and open access to people who possess the right abilities, wherever they might be in the world,” said Martin Turner.
“In order for ACCA to continue to lead, we must remain an important part of the fabric of society. Delivering global benefits through a superior programme of policy insights and research projects is part of this overall objective,” Turner added.
“The 5th edition of the ACCA New Member Ceremony is special. We are honored by the presence of Martin Turner, a role model who is actively involved as an ACCA Council member on several standing committees such as the Market Oversight Committee, the Governance Committee and the Remuneration Committee,” said Yacoob Ramtoola.
“We at BDO are proud to be the sponsor of this year`s ceremony. BDO strongly supports ACCA and its new members in their continuous professional development and allows them to be part of an amazing network both in Mauritius and in more than 100 countries where BDO is present,” he concluded.
