Mauritius forecasts 1m tourists for 2013

Mauritius’ Central Statistics Office said on Tuesday that based on available data, tourist arrivals for 2012 is expected to reach 965,000, which is at the same level with the figure of 964,642 in 2011, while 1 million tourists are expected for 2013.  It said tourist arrivals for the first nine months of 2012 increased by 0.2% to reach 675,584, compared to 674,383 in the corresponding period of 2011.

 

Around 9% of the tourists came for holidays while 4.7% were on business/conference trips and another 2.6% were in transit.

 

The arrivals from Europe that accounts for 58% of total tourist arrivals decreased by 7.7% – from 421,060 in the first nine months of 2011 to 388,649 in the corresponding period of 2012.

 

The arrivals from France, the leading European market, decreased by 11.9% to 179,328.

 

The arrivals from other major European markets changed as follows: Germany (-2.4%), United Kingdom (-3.8%), Italy (-25.6%), Russia (+91.2% ), Spain (+0.6%), Switzerland (+10.6%), Belgium (-7.4%), Austria (-9.8%), Sweden (-11.5%) and Netherlands (-18.9%).

 

Meanwhile, arrivals from Africa with a share of around 27% of total tourist arrivals rose by 13.2% to 184,485.

 

The arrivals from La Reunion increased by 19.2% to 96,567 and those from South Africa were up by 2.9% to 61,252.

 

The following changes were registered from the other African countries: Kenya (+43.5% ), Madagascar (+19.9%), Zimbabwe (+10%), Comoros (+0.1%) and Seychelles (-16.4%).

 

The arrivals from Asia went up by 14.1% from 66,950 for the first nine months of 2011 to 76,378 for the same period of 2012.

 

The following changes were noted: India (+0.7%), China (38.3%), Kong (+110.7%), United Arab Emirates (+44.6%), Japan (+13%), Malaysia (+1%) and Singapore (-15.2%).
