On the occasion of the World Water Day on March 22, the Central Water Authority (CWA), together with the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities (MEPU), are organizing a series of activities to raise awareness among stakeholders and the public on sustainable uses of water.

‘Water and Energy’ is the theme chosen by the United Nation for this year’s event, where the focus is to draw attention to water and energy which are closely interlinked and interdependent.

Stakeholders and the public will be targeted through a series of activities on diverse issues around water with the aim of raising public awareness on the link between water and energy.

The various activities proposed by the CWA and MEPU are: a ‘Save Water’ Campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources; school visits and presentations on the campaign; educational tours at CWA treatment plants; educational competitions where projects will be assigned to secondary students and primary students will have to do drawings and answer quizzes on water; seminars on water and energy; and finally, an exhibition on water, energy and the environment.

During these events, SC and HSC students will be welcomed at the CWA premises or at a specific venue. The aim behind these programmes and activities is to facilitate the development of policies and crosscutting frameworks that bridge ministries and sectors, leading the way to energy security and sustainable water use in a green economy.

Particular attention will be paid to identify best practices that can make a water-and-energy-efficient ‘Green Industry’ a reality; several methodologies are at play in which industrial productivity can be increased while reducing the water footprint.

On the previous World Water Day, the theme was ‘Water Cooperation’ and various activities were organized in the context of world cooperative over water usage by the CWA and the MEPU.

These activities included seminars, exhibition and talks on the theme Water Cooperation, Open Days at La Marie Treatment Plant for primary and secondary school students up to June 2013; awareness campaigns in schools on the theme water saving; and drawing and project competitions for primary and secondary school students.

The World Water Day is a global event which is coordinated by the United Nations. Since 1993, World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of fresh water and advocating for the sustainable management of fresh water resources.
