Mauritius’ Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) has initiated an effective career-development plan by launching a website that acts as an online directory for those seeking jobs in the ICT and BPO sector.
Following this initiative, the HRDC has come forward with the Career Development Stairway, (CaDs), an online employment platform that regulates jobs according to an individual’s abilities and skills.
The launching ceremony for the CaDs was held on Thursday, 05 March 2015, at the HRDC Lecture Theatre, NG Tower Cyber-City Ebene.
Mauritius Education and Human Resources Minister, Leela Devi Dookhun–Luchoomun, served as the chief guest and officially launched the CaDs website in the presence of various executives and staff of the ICT and education sector.
According to the Minister, this website focuses on the fundamentals in order to remove barriers to knowledge, and serves as a platform that will provide valuable information to students, fresh graduates, job seekers and businesses about existing career options in the Information and Technology and BPO sector.
She also pointed out that those already in the sector, as well as those who are planning a career in the sector, can look forward to search out data on the website. The Education Minister also added this website implementation measure would help in expanding the Information and Technology space and open new venues and approaches for other sectors as well.
As for Mr Raj Auckloo, the Director of HRDC, he commented on the challenges facing the ICT sector and job seekers therein.
“Given the dynamic nature of this sector, many employers report an ongoing mismatch of skills between what is required and what is readily available. One of the reasons for this is the information asymmetry that exist between the demand and supply of labour,” he highlighted.
The Career Development Stairway represents a contemporary perspective on career development in the ICT and BPO sector, tailored for advancement in the professional career based on academic and professional competencies. The website primarily offers specific and valuable details on different opportunities, roles and prospects of employment in the ICT sector.
Moreover, jobs that are being proposed are classified according to sectors in the ICT and BPO sector, namely call centres, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), ICT security, networking, multimedia, design and development, system infrastructure, conception of information systems, service management and logistic tests.
Furthermore, such initiatives will enable public and private organisations to be successful, smarter and more competitive, as businesses will potentially have access to a pool of consumers, technological and capital resources. Hence, the CaDs represents a path in promoting human resources in the ICT/BPO sector with the right intellectual and vocational skills to operate within the specialised space.
“The concept of this website was to design consistently according to job profile, showing clear description and expectations. The career progression is presented in a simple language and there is a standard template available, making it easier for the general public to navigate online,” asserted Jenny Chan, Chairperson of the Working Group for the CaDs project.
