Sir Anerood Jugnauth expressed the hope that Small and Medium-sized Enterprises would take advantage of the assistance that the goverment of Mauritius has placed at their disposal.

“The development of the SME sector is one of the leading areas of focus in my government’s economic agenda,” said the Prime Minister, speaking at an event marking twenty years of the group Produit Alimentaires Italien (PAI) in Mauritius.

Several hospitality leaders were present at the event, in the distinguished presence of Sir Anerood Jugnauth and First Lady Sarojini Jugnauth, to mark the inaguration of a new business unit of PAI in Valentina, Phoenix.

PAI supplies hotels with quality foodstuff from Italy, and employs 30 people. Besides, with the development taking place in the tourism sector at present, the Prime Minister declared that he is sure the PAI group is going to increase its market strength.

“It is the kind of SME endeavour that my government encourages, and is ready to put all its strength behind such projects,” the latter noted.

Sir Anerood Jugnauth also asserted that the government wants to make the SME sector “the vertebral column of our economy, and to accelerate the democratization of our economy.”

The Prime Minister said that young entrepreneurs must take advantage of all the opportunities that are offered to them. Indeed, as announced in the latest Budget, an SME-focused bank will soon be launched with an amount of Rs 10 billion injected for the first five years of its operation.

Besides, major fiscal incentives will be granted to SMEs, in particular, exemption from payment of corporate tax for a period of eight years.

Finally, necessary initiatives will be taken to provide considerable support to young entrepreneurs. With these opportunities, Mauritius will realize its transformation into an entrepreneurs’ nation.
