Mauritius’ SSR International ranked Best Airport in Indian Ocean Region

The SSR International Airport has been designated the best airport in the Indian Ocean region at the 2014 World Airport Awards organized by UK-based consultancy Skytrax, on Wednesday, March 26.
Held in the Fira de Barcelona, located right in the heart of Barcelona’s new business area, the 2014 World Airport Awards saw travelers from over 110 countries voting in the largest airport Customer Satisfaction survey.
Mauritius has lifted the title of ‘Best Airport in the Indian Ocean Region’ followed by Maldives, Seychelles and Reunion island.
Outstripped by three South African airports namely Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport, and Durban King Shaka International Airport, the SSR International Airport nevertheless picked up fourth place in the ranking of ‘Best Airports in Africa.’
Mauritius is also ranked sixth for the title of ‘Best Airport Staff in Africa,’ preceded by Tunisia, South Africa, Ethiopia and Reunion island while the Cape Town International Airport in South Africa has bagged first place.
In addition, Mauritius also features in the ranking of ‘World’s Best Airports Serving under 5 million passengers’ at tenth place, surpassed by United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, Ecuador, Denmark, Australia, Iceland, Malta and Luxembourg.
For the second year in a row, air travelers voted the Changi Airport in Singapore as the ‘World’s Best Airport’ and it was also recognized as ‘Best Airport for Leisure Amenities’ as well as the ‘World’s Best Airports Serving 50 Million+ Passengers.’
Tokyo International Airport Haneda in Japan is considered by air travelers as the World’s Best Domestic Airport, while the award for World’s Best Airport Terminal has been given to Heathrow Airport – T5 in London, while QR – Doha International Airport in Qatar received the title of ‘World’s Best Premium Service Airports.’
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport in China is seen as the ‘World’s most improved airport,’ and China’s Sanya Phoenix International Airport bagged the ‘World’s Best Airport VIP Terminal’ award.
The ‘World’s Best Low-Cost Airport’ award was lifted by London’s Stansted Airport while London’s Heathrow Airport distinguished itself with the award of the World’s Best Airport for shopping.
And finally, the cleanest airport in the world is Tokyo International Airport Haneda in Japan.
The World Airport Awards are based on 12.85 million customer nominations across 110 nationalities of air travelers, and cover 410 airports worldwide. The survey evaluates customer satisfaction across 39 key performance indicators for airport service and product – from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration, through to departure at the gate.
