Mauritius star rises in China; wins multiple tourism awards

Mauritius will receive three awards in China after being ranked 9th in the “Top 10 Best Overseas City” and 2nd in the “Top 10 Island Destinations” for the year 2013, by the Ctrip group, leader in the travel and tourism industry in China, and “The Best Emerging Island Destination” by the Chinese magazine “Voyage”, specializing in high-end tourism.
For this occasion a prestigious ceremony will be held today, February 28, by Ctrip at the Shanghai Hyatt Hotel, where 300 eminent guests including representatives of domestic and foreign tourism offices, airlines, tour operators and the press will be present.
Subsequently, the awards ceremony hosted by the magazine “Voyage” will be held in Shanghai JE on the March 6th, which will welcome 250 guests including representatives of domestic and foreign tourism offices, airlines, travel agents, media and several Chinese companies.
Incidentally, “The Best Emerging Island Destination” award will be the only trophy awarded to an island destination by the magazine “Voyage”.
“Mauritius is undoubtedly a rising island destination on the Chinese market. These awards reinforce how successful Mauritius has been in its process of diversification on its target markets,” revealed Mauritius Minister of Tourism and Leisure, Michael Sik Yuen.
“(This is) a first step, which is very significant to an expansion of our tourism markets in Asia, more specifically China,” he added.
“These awards mark a year of intense promotional campaign of Mauritius in China and are the result of various joint promotion actions of the MTPA, Air Mauritius and the local Mauritian Tour Operators. We have been able to match the Mauritian tourism products to the needs of Chinese customers”, stated the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) director, Karl Mootoosamy.
Thus, these distinctions coupled with the promotional campaign, will certainly increase Mauritius’ visibility as a tourist destination on the Chinese market in 2014 for several months.
Moreover, with the broadcasting of the celebrity reality show by the famous presenter Chen Luyu in April and the release of the two films namely “5 Minutes to Tomorrow” and “Breakup Guru” shot in Mauritius, in June and July, it is expected that more Chinese travelers will visit the island destination.
It is good to note that for 2013, the Chinese market experienced an impressive growth of 100.7%, with 41,913 Chinese tourists visiting Mauritius in 2013 against 20,885 in 2012. For the month of January 2014, tourist arrivals from China grew by 298.7 % with 6,706 Chinese tourists arriving last month against 1682 in January 2013.
This highlights the fruitful combination of the efforts of the MTPA and Air Mauritius on this emerging market.
