Mauritius tourist arrivals up 4.6% year-on-year till December 2014

Mauritius has welcomed 1,038,968 tourists from January to December 2014, which is a rise of 4.6% over the corresponding period in 2013, when 993,106 tourists visited the island, according to data released by Statistics Mauritius on Monday January12, 2015.
Besides, for the month of December 2014, the number of tourists visiting Mauritius showed 120,784 which is an increase of 29, 550 tourists in comparison with November 2014. Furthermore, in December 2013 only 117,086 tourists were registered which can be translated by a 3.1% increase for December 2014.
Coming to the main contributors to the island economy’s tourism sector between January and December 2014, Statistics Mauritius registered 570, 548 tourists from the European market, among which 64,557 tourists for the month of December 2014. It is an increase of 4,850 tourists compare to December last year.
The three main contributors on the European market were France, United Kingdom and Germany with 243,665; 115,326 and 62,231 tourists between January to December, 2014 respectively.
Statistics Mauritius has thus, registered 30,115 tourists for December 2014 coming from France, which is a net increase compared to December 2013 where tourists arrivals did not cross 29,110.
10,599 tourists from the United Kingdom visited the island in December 2014, which is a net progress compared to last year at the same period where the number of tourists was 8,121. However, on a monthly basis it is worth noting that there has been a decrease of 212 tourists compared to November 2014 where the number of tourists hit 10,811.
Elsewhere for the African continent, visitors between January to December 2014 were at 274,156 after a decrease of 1.3 % compared to the corresponding period in 2013 where tourists` arrivals was 277,773.
The main contributors on the African Market were the French territory Reunion Island, continuing to be the main source of income to the island economy with 141,665 tourists between January to December 2014, followed by South Africa 93,120 and finally Seychelles with 6,926 tourists.
However, Reunion Island has registered a major decrease of 5.1 % compared with December 2013 where the number of tourists ramped up to 18,556, whereas last year at the same period it was at 17,616.
From Asia, 158,361 tourists were registered between January and December 2014, which is an increase of 19.5% compare to the corresponding period of 2013, where tourists` arrivals hit a figure of 132,554
China and India were the main contributors for the Asian market with 63,365 tourists from China between Janaury and December 2014 and 61,167 tourists during the same calendar year for India.
7,444 tourists were registered for December 2014 from India, which is an increase of 32.7% compared to the corresponding period of 2013 where numbers did not cross 5,611.
Other contributors to the island economy between January to December 2014 were Oceania and America with 18,656 and 16,548 of tourists respectively.
Finally, it can be noted that Mauritius has fully attain its expected quota of tourists with 1,038,968 registered, compare to the 1,030,000 tourists forecasted by Statistics Mauritius.
