In a recent publication, data from Statistics Mauritius show that trade in ICT goods increased from the period 2011 to 2012. Imports increased by 16.2% that is from Rs.6, 385 million to Rs.7,418 million. Exports, including re-exports, also increased by 10.9%, from Rs.358 million to Rs.397 million. The ICT sector comprises ICT-related activities in manufacturing, telecommunications, wholesale and retail trade, and business services such as call centres, software development and website development. The value added of the ICT sector rose by 6.1% from Rs.18,272 million in 2011 to Rs.19,388 million in 2012. The share of ICT sector in GDP in 2012 was 6.4%, same as in 2011. Around 44% of value added of the ICT sector in 2012 was generated by activities of Telecommunications and 12% by Wholesale and Retail Trade.
The international internet bandwidth per inhabitant increased from 4,505.4 in 2011 to 6,396.4 bits per second in 2012.
Between 2011 and 2012, ICT access improved in the country. Increases were registered in:
· number of mobile cellular phone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants from 100.4 to 114.9;
· number of internet subscriptions per 100 inhabitants from 28.7 to 44.0;
· the proportion of households with a computer from 37.7% to 44.9%; and
· the proportion of households with internet access at home from 29.0% to 39.2%.
The number of fixed telephone lines per 100 inhabitants, however, decreased from 29.1 to 27.0.
ICT Development Index (IDI)
Mauritius made progress towards becoming an information society from 2011 to 2012. The ICT Development Index (IDI) of the country, which ranges from 0 (lowest ICT development) to 10 (highest ICT development), improved from 4.21 in 2011 to 4.57 in 2012.
Latest provisional IDI figures compiled by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) are available by country for 2011. According to these figures, Mauritius ranked 74th among 155 countries in 2011 in terms of ICT development while Korea (IDI of 8.56) ranked first.
