The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) will throw open 17 Free Income Tax Assistance (FITA) centers – 16 in Mauritius and one in Rodrigues – from 29 to 30 March, 2014, to aid taxpayers in completing and submitting their declaration forms.
The centers will stay open from 8:30 am to 4 pm on both days, with access to computers with free internet connections as well as MRA officers, to ease the burden of the taxpayers.
The 16 centers would be located as follows: MRA head office for Port-Louis; Aryan Vedic Hindu Aided School and Mesnil Primary School for Vacoas and Phœnix; Royal college for Curepipe; Willoughby and Rivière-des-Anguilles Primary Schools for Mahébourg and Savanne; R. Gujadhur and Edward Walter Primary Schools for Flacq and Quartier-Militaire ; Maheswarnath Primary School for Triolet ; D. Hurry Primary School for Goodlands; Bheewa Mahadoo Primary School for Rivière-du-Rempart; Philippe Rivalland et Notre Dame des Victoires RCA Primary Schools for Beau-Bassin and Rose-Hill; Louis Nellan et Baichoo Madhoo Government Schools for Quatre-Bornes; St-Pierre RCA school for Saint-Pierre; and finally, Rodrigues taxpayers would have to go to the Cliderlex building at Port-Mathurin.
Further, cash registers will be made available for taxpayers who wish to make their payment on the spot, whereas those opting for online payment will be able to get assistance from MRA officers, if needed.
Taxpayers would have to use their previous year password to reach their account. Those who have forgotten or lost their password can make a request at the MRA by sending an e-mail at ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’, from their previous email address.
Another mandatory input is the Tax Account Number (TAN), which is registered on the emolument that the taxpayers received from their employers.
Moreover, those who receive income from other sources would be able to declare it on the same form this year.
To make it easier for taxpayers, the MRA has also put forward pre-filled forms with basic information for those who are already registered at the MRA, however, the latter would have to update their form with information that was not required earlier.
Finally, after some inconvenience faced by taxpayers on the electronic system last year, the MRA has updated it system such that tax payments can now be effected electronically through Internet banking, ATM, SMS and Credit Card. Also, payments can be made right until April 15, 2014, which is the last day of payment.
