Edited excerpts from an exclusive interview with AfricaMoney:
What do you expect in terms of sales of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge in Mauritius? Is it going to beat the S5 model?
Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge are our latest flagship models. The whole world has responded very positively to these innovations in the mobile spaceever since the S6 was unveiled on 1st March at the Mobile World Congress(MWC) where it won the “Best in show”award at MWC 2015. Mauritius is no different. Not only Samsung fans, but the market at large has been waiting impatiently for the availability of the S6.We had a grand launch event on the evening of the 17thApril. The sales started on Day 1 and, so far, our resellers have outsold any other Samsung phone as well as competition, for the number of phones sold during that same period. We are very excited to have hit this milestone and expect to keep up the same momentum as there is no comparable phone to the S6 in the market today.
Being a regional director, is there any forecast of the sales in the Indian Ocean region?
Again, we expect very good sales not only because it is the latest Samsung on the market, but also because it is a premium product which is innovative and packed with new features. The pre-order exercise we undertook before the official launch of the S6 has proven to be a great success.
How has it been doing in other countries?
The same expectations abound everywhere. Samsung has come out with exceptional smartphones so the pre-orders have simply exploded —and, in fact, some retailers sold out within a day of availability! In some countries, the first week of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge sales were “impressive”, spurring predictions that overall sales for both devices will break a record andcross 70 million units globally for both.
What is the most striking feature of Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge that you’d like to tell potential users about?
The first thing that strikes you about the smartphone is the gorgeous design. It is sophisticated, futuristic and very sleek. However, good looksare only one part of the story, and there are just so many plus points. Being privileged to be able to use the S6 edge for a while now, I think the processing power is awesome. In fact, under the hood of this phone, you will find the latest 64-bit Samsung Exynos 7420 octa-core processor with a 64bit OS which makes it the fastest phone around. In a nutshell, this phone is simplypacked with innovation and technology.
Please advise if there are any significant differences between the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, barring size?
Both have almost the same features — 5.1 inch super AMOLED display, premium aluminium chassis &Gorilla Glass 4 exterior, a 5mp front camera anda 16mp rear camera, among others. The main differences are the dual curved display making the S6 edge more immersive and the additional functionalities such as the ‘Information Stream’, ‘Night Clock’, ‘Edge Lighting’ and ‘People edge’ that it boasts.
The curved side of the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge does more than make the phone look pretty as it displays missed alerts, notifications and news updates with ‘Information Stream.’ Another feature that the edge comes equipped with is ‘Night Clock.’ We also have ‘People edge’ which allows you to add up to five contacts which can easily be accessed with a swipe from the edge screen and you can also set-up specific colours for your contacts. Edge lighting will light up the edge screen with flashes of light when you get a call, email, or text message.
How does the Samsung Galaxy S6 fit into professional use? Any particular feature it boasts to make life easier for businessmen?
Well, I have heard so many people complaining about the battery life of their phones. The S6 has a very durable battery—with just 10 mins of charging, the phone is good to go for 4 hours, and both models come with built-in wireless charging.
I will also take this opportunity to highlight the most relevant enterprise-friendly features and why they warrant your attention. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are the first smartphones to feature a 64-bit octacore processor that can crack 14 nanometers. If you make IT purchasing decisions, you’ll want to focus on build quality in addition to performance. Our new smartphones combine a metal frame with a Gorilla Glass 4 exterior that wraps around the entire device. This fourth version of Corning’s Glass is twice as tough as the previous version and can withstand three-foot (one-meter) drops 80% of the time. The glass should also be able to completely withstand the scratches and fades associated with typical day-to-day usage.
Let’s talk about security next. Most enterprise device purchasers associate Samsung and its Knox application as the standard for mobility management and security. On our new devices, users will be able to access two different environments (one for business, one for play) with the mere tap of a desktop icon. App managers will be able to deploy, manage and remove applications from the back end without having to physically access each device. Additionally, the S6 and S6 edge offer remote wipe capabilities, which self-destruct the phone data in case of theft. Also, Samsung has upgraded its fingerprint sensor to be more accurate and easier to use.
Finally, how is the market share of Samsung in Mauritius? Who are the main competitors and how is Samsung countering such competition?
Although we are faced with competition from the grey & fake market, we still have people who appreciate innovation and quality.Thishas made us the most preferred brand in the smartphone market for some years now and we thank these people for their trust. Our constant focus on research and development, innovation as well as understanding customersneeds give us a unique position on the market.
