India’s leading telecommunication player Bharti Enterprises Ltd has acquired 25% stake in Emtel Ltd, a Mauritian telecommunications major, upon an agreement entered by Currimjee Jeewanjee & Company Limited (CJ).
CJ carries out activities in telecommunications, media and information technology, real estate, tourism, energy, food and beverages as well as household and personal care products.
Emtel Ltd, a one-stop-shop for ICT solutions offering a wide range of products and services in Mauritius, falls under the aegis of CJ in its telecommunication cluster where it has just announced a strategic agreement with Bharti Enterprises.
Under the agreement, Bharti will acquire a 25% stake in Emtel and Emtel will thus benefit from Bharti’s expertise and experience in the telecommunications sector. This is expected to improve the efficiency and competence level of the company to allow it to remain competitive, and will also enable Emtel to continue to cater for the ever growing and ever changing needs of Mauritian customers.
It is to be noted that Emtel, the first mobile operator in the Southern Hemisphere, was a founding partner of Bharti Airtel, a Bharti Enterprises group company, in 1995 and thus this relationship dates back to 1992.
Upon this new partnership, the board of directors of Emtel will henceforth include additional Directors from both Bharti and CJ.
This partnership is in line with CJ’s strategy which aims at associating itself with international established players who are leaders in their fields, as well as with its development plan in the telecom space.
