Tourist arrival in Mauritius for 2015 inched up by 10.9% with December welcoming the highest level of tourists. From January to December 2015, France, Reunion and UK maintained their places in the top three source markets for inbound tourists to Mauritius, with 254,362, 143,834 and 129,796 respectively, followed by South Africa and China positioned at third and  fourth place with 101,954 and 89,585 respectively.

Mauritius welcomed 1,151,723 tourists over the period from January to December 2015, which represents a 10.9% rise over the corresponding period in 2014 when 1,038 968 tourists visited the island economy, according to data released by Statistics Mauritius on January 8 , 2016.

Besides, for December 2015, the number of tourists visiting Mauritius stood at 132,735 representing an increase of 9.9% over December 2014.

On a monthly basis in December 2015 recorded higher level of tourist arrival compared to November 2015 representing a hike of 25.0% with 106,218 tourists visited the island in November 2015.

For the month of December 2015, as compared to December 2014, France maintained its first and position as the main source markets with 31,031.

Besides, China climbs to the Seventh position with 4,842 tourist’s arrival.

For the longer period from January to December 2015, France, Reunion and UK maintained their places in the top three source markets for inbound tourists to Mauritius, with 254,362, 143,834 and 129,796 respectively, followed by South Africa and China positioned at third and  fourth place with 101,954 and 89,585 respectively.

Coming to the main contributors to the island economy’s tourism sector between January 2015 and December  2015, Statistics Mauritius registered 631,783 arrivals from the European market, of which 75,486 tourists came in the month of December 2015 alone.

The three main contributors from the European market from January to December 2015 were France, UK and Germany with 254,362 129,786 and 75,272 footfalls respectively.

Moreover, for the African continent, visitors between January 2015 to December 2015 stood at 284,628, after an increase of 3.8% over the corresponding period in 2014 when tourist arrivals stood at 274,156.

The main contributors on the African market were the French territory of Reunion Island, continuing to be the main source of income to the island economy with 143,834 tourists for the period of January to December 2015, followed by South Africa at 101,954 and finally Madagascar, with 12,215 tourists. For December 2015, South Africa, Reunion and Madagascar dominated, with 18,112, 16,025, and 1,239 footfalls respectively.

From Asia, 16,135 tourists entered the island economy in December 2015, which represent an increase of 16.8% compared to the corresponding period of 2014; while over the longer period from January to December 2015, 197.765 tourists came to the island economy from Asia, growing 24.9% over the corresponding period in 2014.

China and India were the main contributors from the Asian market with 89,585 tourists coming from China over January 2015 to December 2015 and 72,145 tourists from India during the same period.

As many as 4,842 tourists came to Mauritius in December 2015 from China, which is an increase of 38.1% compared to the corresponding period of 2014. In addition, 7,753 tourists came in to Mauritius from India, representing a rise of 4.2% compared to the corresponding period in 2014.

Finally, other contributors for the year in December 2015 were Oceania at 2,497 tourists, showing a rise of 0.5%, while only 1,968 American tourists visited Mauritius, representing a drop of 8.1% over the December 2014.
